  • Liposuction surgery - Should You Or Shouldn't you?

Q: If you feel uncertain about whether or not to have liposuction surgery, how long should you give yourself to decide?

A: As long as it takes. There is no rush.

Q: But you've said that many patients tell you, 'I wish I had done this years ago."

A: That's true. But you should never push yourself. The time to have liposuction is when you have made up your mind and you really want it, no matter how long it takes you to come to that decision. Only then will you be in the right state of mind to manage the liposuction recovery period and get the rest you need during it.

Q: What if you're stuck? What if you have all the information and like the doctor, but can't make that final decision to go ahead?

A: One thing you might do is call the doctor's office and schedule a second consultation. Bring a list of the issues that are bothering you and ask the doctor about all of them. Maybe in this discussion, the doctor can help you pinpoint what is holding you back. You might ask the doctor, "What do you think I can get out of this ultrasonic liposuction surgery? Are my expectations realistic? Do you feel certain I am a good candidate?"

And the doctor might ask you, "Are you concerned about the possible risks? Pain? Money? Taking time off from work? What people are going to think of you if you have cosmetic surgery?"

Once you are able to identify exactly what is troubling you, it should be easier to settle those issues.

Q: Are there some people who should decide on no treatment at all?

A; No one should feel coerced into having any treatment that they do not desire themselves. Liposuction is an elective, cosmetic treatment, it has some risks, and people need to be in their best physical shape, eating a well-balanced diet, and exercising regularly. Liposuction is not for everyone, and even perfect candidates might not want to undergo it for any number of reasons.

Q: What do you say to people who think they need liposuction but really don't?

A: If they are very overweight, I remind them that the procedure is not a replacement for diet and exercise. All those liposuction before and after images they see started with a person who was not seriously overweight - they just needed to lose a few extra pounds. If they are not overweight, I remind them that liposuction is not an appropriate treatment for people who have no excess fat to be removed. If they have psychological problems in this area, I refer them to counseling.
